DARLINGTON - No one was injured after a smoldering firework started a fire that completely burned down a Darlington residence Sunday morning.

The Darlington Fire Department was dispatched at 3:32 a.m. to what began as a garage fire on Wells Street. The blaze, triggered by a firework that wasn't disposed of properly, quickly spread to the home, which was completely consumed despite the efforts of the Darlington, Mineral Point and Argyle fire departments.

The fire also spread to the neighboring Masonic Temple, which sustained moderate damage on one side.

All residents of the home were able to escape the fire without suffering injuries, Darlington Police Chief Jason King said.

King said fireworks were suspected to be the cause of the fire early in the investigation. Soon after, a teenager who had been playing with fireworks in the garage came forward and reported that the firework was believed to have been extinguished but must have ignited a flammable item inside the garage, starting the fire.

No charges were filed against the teen, and the case is considered closed.
