Virgil W. Tertin, age 86 of Monroe, died Saturday, November 3, 2012 at the Monroe Manor. Virgil was born July 12, 1926 in Monroe, the son of Willie E. and Hazel E. (Siedschlag) Tertin. He graduated from Monroe High School in 1944 and served in the U.S. Air Force from 1944 until January, 1947 with the 313th group of the 13th Air Force. Virgil served as a mechanic servicing and maintaining the B29 Bomber while stationed in both the U.S. and one year at Clark Field in the Philippine Islands. Following his honorable discharge, Virgil married Joyce E. Haman on April 20, 1947 at the Immanuel Evangelical Church, Monroe. He briefly worked for the Rufenacht Gas and Oil Station and Montgomery Ward before taking a job with John Bruni. He was employed at Bruni-Miller Company in various capacities including part owner until his retirement in 1998. Virgil was an active member of the Monroe United Methodist Church where he served 10 years as chairman of the new church building committee. Many of his favorite hobbies included fishing, hunting, gardening, and traveling with his wife. He loved spending time with his grandchildren and great grandchildren.

He is survived by his three sons, James (Debra) Tertin of Baxter, MN, David (Diane) Tertin of Browntown, and Joel (Cheryl) Tertin of Monroe; 7 grandchildren; four great grandchildren; and a sister-in-law, Doris (Mike) Schmerse of Monroe. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Joyce on August 4, 2012; a son, William Virgil Tertin on Jan. 20, 1957; and a sister, Sadie Oostdik.

Memorial services will be held on Thursday, November 8, 2012, at 11:00 a.m. at the Monroe United Methodist Church. Reverend Randy Booth will officiate with a luncheon to follow at the church. A private family graveside service with military honors will be in Greenwood Cemetery, Monroe. Visitation will be held at the church on Wednesday, November 7, from 4:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers a memorial fund will be established in Virgil's name for the United Methodist Church students for post secondary education.
