EDGERTON - Sonja Lea (Helgesen) Collins, age 46, of Edgerton died unexpectedly on Thursday, October 6, 2016 at Mercy Hospital & Trauma Center, from injuries sustained in an automobile accident. She was born in Stoughton, WI on January 24, 1970, the daughter of Thomas W. Helgesen and Rosa E. (Mueller) Helgesen. Sonja graduated from Parker High School in 1988 and later married Michael J. Collins on July 26, 1997. Sonja worked with her father and brother at T & K Helgesen, Inc. as the office manager. Over the years, she also bartended at several local establishments. Sonja was a very caring, compassionate and loving mother and wife, who would go out of her way to help someone. She loved the outdoors, nature and spending time around horses. She was a member of SMILES, and the Rock River Thresheree, where she volunteered many hours of her time.

She is survived by her husband: Mike; and her eight year old son: Eric; father: Thomas Helgesen of Janesville; brothers and sisters: Kurt (Mary) Helgesen of Janesville, Aaron (Deb) Richards of Milton, Shannon DeRemer of Janesville and Geoffrey Richards of Beloit; nieces and nephews: Ashley (Aaron) Manogue, Roz Allen, Rachel Allen, Kaley (Matt) Shumway, Elin DeRemer, Gunnar DeRemer, Kali McKaig, and Laci McKaig. She is further survived by her mother and father-in-law: Barb and Earl Collins of Edgerton; and sister-in-law: Kathy McKaig of Newville. Sonja was predeceased by her mother: Rosa; brother: Eric Helgesen; step-mother: Kathleen Helgesen, grandparents: Elmer and Lucille Helgesen and Walter and Meta Mueller.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, October 15, 2016 at the Whitcomb-Lynch Funeral Home, Janesville with Rev. Mary Gafner officiating. Visitation will be on Friday from 4:00 PM until 7:00 PM at the Whitcomb-Lynch Funeral Home and again on Saturday morning from 10:00 AM until the time of the service at the funeral home. Memorials would be greatly appreciated if they were made to her son, Eric's college fund, c/o Blackhawk Community Credit Union, Edgerton or the City of Edgerton Dog Park.
