Sherman Johnson, age 98, of Monroe, WI, formerly of Wiota, WI, passed away Monday, August 31, 2015 at Aster Assisted Living in Monroe. He was born November 18, 1916 in Gratiot Township, WI, the son of Henry and Lena (Torkelson) Johnson. Sherman graduated from Argyle High School in 1935. He later attended Brown's College in Freeport, IL. Sherman served in the United States Army Air Corp from 1942 until 1945. He was united in marriage to Gayle Fingerson on September 14, 1946 in Madison, WI. Sherman lived and farmed in Wiota Township most of his life.

Sherman is survived by his wife: Gayle of Monroe; six children: Connie (Roger) Sack of Albuquerque, NM, Mary (Tom) Stepanek of Wild Rose, WI, Ralph (Margie) Johnson of South Wayne, WI, Bob (Joan) Johnson of Barneveld, WI, Richard (Laurie) Johnson of Gratiot, WI, and Mark (Jennifer Brandt) Johnson of Wiota; 15 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers: Ralph and Theron Johnson; one sister: Hazel Holmen; four sisters-in-law; three brothers-in-law; and one granddaughter.

Sherman was a member of Wiota Lutheran Church and served on its church council. He was also a member of Wiota School Board and served as its clerk. Sherman was a past president of Wiota Cheese Co-Op. He had a genuine love for music which included him playing the fiddle as a young child and also in recent years playing music with various friends.

A funeral service will be held on Friday, September 4, 2015 at 11:00 A.M. at Wiota Lutheran Church (6682 State Rd 78, South Wayne, WI) with Rev. John Tabaka of Grace Lutheran Church in Monroe, WI officiating. Burial will be in West Wiota Cemetery where military graveside rites will be accorded by Argyle American Legion Post #251. A visitation will be held on Thursday, September 3, 2015 from 4:00 P.M. until 7:00 P.M. at the church. The Erickson Funeral Home in Darlington is serving the family.
