MONROE - The Monroe Police Department is reminding pet owners their animals must be on a leash or contained by a fence when outside.
Pet owners could face about a $175 fine for each time a pet is not kept contained, according to news release from Police Chief Fred Kelley.
Numerous incidents could result in city action to stop the nuisance. An at-large pet could be picked up as a stray and possibly rescued by the Green County Humane Society. The owner could then face a fee to reclaim the pet.
City codes require pet owners to have their pets on a leash or some type of reasonable control when walking them. Owners must also clean up after their pets.
The police department's reminder follows numerous complaints about pets running at large, particularly when pets are allowed on a neighbor's property, and when pet owners fail to clean up after pets while walking them, Kelley said.
In addition, pets are not allowed in city parks; rules signs are posted at the entrances to parks.
