MADISON - Nathan E. Dettwiler, age 67, of Madison, passed away on Sunday, May 3, 2009, at St. Mary's Hospital, after a brief illness. He was born on Aug. 31, 1941, in Monroe, the son of Ernest and Helen (Schmoldt) Dettwiler.
Nathan served in the U. S. Navy after high school until 1962. He married Thrina J. Hammit in 1962, in Whittier, Calif. They moved to Madison, where their children were born. Nathan worked as a painter for more than 30 years. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and building furniture and musical instruments.
Nathan is survived by his wife, Thrina of Madison; two sons, Jon E. Dettwiler and Ronald A. (Shelly) Dettwiler, all of Madison; a granddaughter, Maya Dettwiler; a sister, Joan Carlin of Fox Lake; and brother, Neil (Sue) Dettwiler of Oregon.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and brothers, La Vern Wickersham and Gene Dettwiler.
Funeral services will be held at CHAPEL VALLEY COMMUNITY CHURCH, 2950 Chapel Valley Road, Fitchburg, at 10 a.m. on Saturday, May 9, 2009, with the Rev. Tim Genin presiding. Burial will be at Highland Memory Gardens. Visitation will be held at GUNDERSON EAST FUNERAL HOME, 5203 Monona Drive, Madison from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. on Friday, May 8, 2009, and at the church from 9 a.m. until the time of the service on Saturday.
