Brodhead/Janesville - Maxine Johnson was born March 5, 1924, in Luther Valley, Plymouth Township, the daughter of Ira and Hazel (Chrispensen) Larson. Maxine, age 89, passed away on Friday, June 28, 2013 at Woods Crossing in Brodhead, where she had resided the past 5 years. She spent her young years at Fisher School and graduated from Orfordville High School in 1942.
Maxine was united in marriage to Orville C. Johnson on December 7, 1946 in Newark Township, Rock County, Wisconsin. They were dairy farmers in the Rock County area for 60 years. Maxine especially enjoyed her years as a square dancer in the Janesville-Milton area.
They had 7 children: Paul (deceased), Phillip of Janesville, Peter (Jill Mielke) of Janesville, Pamela (Harlan) Flick of Richland Center, Patricia of Janesville, Perry (Jodie) of Brodhead, and Phern Phillips of Albany.
Maxine is survived by her 6 children, 14 grandchildren, and 10 great-grandchildren. Family get-togethers were very important and brought great joy to her.
Maxine was a homemaker and mother first. She worked for a few years at Advance Transformer in Monroe. It was also important to her to contribute to her community. She was an active leader in the Plymouth 4-H Club with her children for many years. She was President of the Ladies Auxiliary Unit at Orfordville American Legion for a few years. Maxine was also a member of the Orfordville Lutheran Church and its Ruth Circle for over 50 years.
In addition to her volunteer activities, Maxine enjoyed traveling. She traveled to Indonesia, Hawaii, and took a trip to Norway to see the area her ancestors came from. She also traveled on many bus trips around the United States. She lived her life to the fullest and always had a smile and a kind word for everyone she met.
Maxine was preceded in death by her husband Orville, son Paul, daughter-in-law Melva, son-in-law Todd, 3 grandchildren, 2 great-grandchildren, her parents, and sisters Ruth (Bub) Thompson and Ann (Howard) Newcomer.

Funeral services will be held at Orfordville Lutheran Church at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, July 2, 2013, with the Reverend Eric Jones officiating. Friends may call on Monday from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at NEWCOMER-SILVERTHORN CHAPEL ON THE HILL, Hwy 11 and 3008 South Coon Island Road, Orfordville, and at the Church on Tuesday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service.
