MADISON - Mary Waelchli, age 84, died on Wednesday, October 29, 2008 at Meriter Hospital. She was born at a cheese factory in rural Green County where her family lived on September 30, 1924. She was the daughter of Gottfried and Johanna Waelchli. She graduated from Albany High School and received a nursing degree from St. Mary's Hospital. Mary was a career Air Force nurse and retired with the rank of Major in 1972. Following retirement she lived in Lubbock, Texas and Madison, Wisconsin. In retirement she was the "favorite aunt" to many nieces and nephews.

Survivors include, a sister, Johanna (Gene) Stuckey, and a brother, Henry (Darlene) Waelchli, both of Monroe; two sisters-in-law, Gertrude Waelchli, of Monticello and Marjorie Waelchli, of Monroe; and many nieces, nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Rose Jaeger and two brothers, John and William Waelchli; and a brother-in-law, Richard Jaeger.

Memorial funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, November 8, 2008 at the JOYCE-RYAN FUNERAL HOME, 5701 Odana Road, Madison, WI. The Rev. John Swanson will officiate. Friends and family may call after noon at the funeral home on Saturday, until the time of service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to a medical charity of your choice.
