Mandatory insurance law takes effect today

MONROE - Wisconsin drivers need to be aware that the state's mandatory vehicle insurance law goes into effect today.

According to Monroe Police Chief Fred Kelley, drivers:

• Will be required to carry proof of insurance with them at all times. Kelley suggested drivers put at least one insurance card in their vehicle. Drivers can receive a $10 ticket even if they have insurance but don't have proof of insurance with them. People can be fined up to $500 if they don't have insurance.

• Will need to have a policy providing for at least $50,000 in bodily injury coverage for one person, $100,000 for bodily coverage per accident, and $15,000 to cover property damage. Those limits went into effect Jan. 1.

• Need underinsured motorist coverage for state drivers on new or renewed policies. That portion of the law went into effect Nov. 1.
