MONROE - Wisconsin drivers need to be aware that the state's mandatory vehicle insurance law goes into effect today.
According to Monroe Police Chief Fred Kelley, drivers:
Will be required to carry proof of insurance with them at all times. Kelley suggested drivers put at least one insurance card in their vehicle. Drivers can receive a $10 ticket even if they have insurance but don't have proof of insurance with them. People can be fined up to $500 if they don't have insurance.
Will need to have a policy providing for at least $50,000 in bodily injury coverage for one person, $100,000 for bodily coverage per accident, and $15,000 to cover property damage. Those limits went into effect Jan. 1.
Need underinsured motorist coverage for state drivers on new or renewed policies. That portion of the law went into effect Nov. 1.
