Junior Henry "Red" Cowell

Junior Henry "Red" Cowell, age 86 of Monroe, died Saturday, June 11, 2011, at Monroe Manor Nursing Home. Junior was born June 28, 1924 in Avon Township, Rock County, Wisconsin, the son of Joseph H. and Emma A. (Borchardt) Cowell. He married Betty DeVoe on December 1, 1945 in Brodhead. Following their marriage, Junior and Betty farmed in the Albany area for 20 years before moving to Monroe in 1965. He worked for a brief time at the Green County Sheriffs Department before taking a job at Industrial Combustion. He retired in 1989. Junior was a member of the Monroe United Methodist Church, loved traveling with Betty throughout the United States, and enjoyed dancing and animals, especially horses.

He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Betty Cowell of Monroe; a sister, Arlene Griest of Ohio; a brother, George Cowell of Arizona; and a sister-in-law, Jeannine Cowell of Monroe.

He was preceded in death by his parents, seven brothers and one sister.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, June 14, 2011, at 11:00 a.m., at the Newcomer Funeral Home, Monroe, with Reverend Randy Booth officiating.

A luncheon will be held at the Monroe United Methodist Church followed by interment in Greenwood Cemetery, Brodhead. Visitation will be at the funeral home on Tuesday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service. A memorial fund will be established in Junior's name.
