James E. Goonan, age 79, formerly of the Browntown and South Wayne area, died on Monday, May 10, 2010 at his residence in Manitowoc, after a long battle with A.L.S. He was born on February 4, 1931 in Chicago, IL, the son of Frank A. and Mary (Devlin) Goonan. He attended and graduated from De LaSalle High School in Chicago. James and Mary Jane Goff were married on October 4, 1958 in Milwaukee. He was the owner operator of James Goonan Trucking in Browntown for over 46 years. Jim was a member of St. John's Catholic Church in South Wayne and of St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Manitowoc. He was in the Illinois National Guard, 33 Division, 210 FA for 3 years and on the Pecatonica Co-op board for 15 years. Jim enjoyed flying ultra-lite airplanes and boating, but he especially cherished spending time with his family.
He is survived by his wife, Mary Jane Goonan of Manitowoc; son, James W. (Lori) Goonan of Manitowoc; daughter, Ann Marie Goonan of Waukesha; grandchildren, Emily, Hannah, Olivia and Seth; brother, Frank (Dorothy) Goonan of Browntown; also many nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his parents; sisters, Betty O'Connor, Sister Marguerite Goonan O.P.; brother-in-law, Harold O'Connor and nephew, Harold O'Connor Jr.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, May 14, 2010 at St. John's Catholic Church in South Wayne. Celebrant will be Fr. David Wanish, with burial in St. Joseph's Catholic Cemetery in Gratiot. A visitation will be held on Thursday, from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. with a Rosary recited at 8 p.m. Thursday at the Shriner-Hager-Gohlke Funeral Home in Monroe. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Holy Family Hospice of Manitowoc, St. Vincent De Paul or the A.L.S. Association.
