BRODHEAD - Hubert "Hubie" W. Vickers, age 71, of Brodhead, passed away on Friday, April 11, 2014 at Monroe Clinic hospital, Monroe, WI. He was born on May 1, 1942 in Wayne Township, Lafayette County, WI, the son of Earl and Lucille (Broege) Vickers. He married Rita Ringhand on August 22, 1964 in Monroe.
Hubie attended Monroe and Monticello schools, graduating in 1960 from New Glarus High School. He then attended MATC. He was a member of the United Methodist Church, Brodhead. Hubie had worked for Karlen Lumber Co. and Voegeli Chevrolet, Monticello, WI. He also had worked for General Motors of Janesville for 30 years, retiring in 1996. Hubie also owned and operated "Vickers Sports Shop' for over 40 years. He was very active in the City of Brodhead Government, serving on the city council for a numbers of years and was currently serving as its president. Hubie enjoyed fishing, hunting all kinds of wildlife and morel mushrooms, motorcycle trips, and traveling. He and Rita had traveled to Italy, Dubai, AbuDhabi, cruises to Alaska, Hawaii and several to the Caribbean. Truthfulness, honesty and fairness were very important to him, as well as spending time with his grandchildren, and visiting with his friends, sharing stories and life experiences, and offering his opinion. He did volunteer driving for Evansville Manor residents' outings and enjoyed visiting with them. He was the "go-to fix it person' who enjoyed the challenge to tinker and salvage something. He also enjoyed reading Louis Lamour books, watching TV westerns, working on his lawn and the dogs he owned over the years. He was a member of the UAW and Lifetime member of the NRA. He wanted to enjoy the things he could now and not put them off. His favorite saying to get people moving, "The bus is leaving" and now, the bus has left.
He is survived by his wife, Rita; two sons, Michael (Charity) Vickers, Brodhead, WI, Daniel Vickers, Milton, WI; five grandchildren, Bailee, Ashton, Natalie, Abigail and Mallory Vickers; three sisters, Donna (Roger) Stoll, Belleville, WI, Sandra (Michael) Ritschard, Bonnie (Calvin) Soddy, both of Juda, WI; three brothers, Robert (Carol Marie) Vickers, LaFayette, TN, Wesley (Diane) Vickers, Janesville, WI, James (Stephanie) Vickers, Harshaw, WI; a brother-in-law, Randall (Gloria) Ringhand, Monroe, WI; in-laws, Walter and Bernadine Ringhand, Monroe, WI, and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, April 17, 2014, at the United Methodist Church, Brodhead, with Mr. Cal Schaver and Rev. Ellis "Hap' Itson officiating. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, April 16, 2014, from 4:30 p.m. until 7:30 p.m. at the D.L. NEWCOMER FUNERAL HOME, BRODHEAD, WI.
