Helen B. Hawkins age 81 of Monticello, died Tuesday, September 18, 2012 at the Monroe Manor Nursing Home. Helen was born June 19, 1931 in Monroe, the daughter of Henry and Barbara (Steiner) Stauffacher. She graduated from Monticello High School and Rockford Business College before marrying Royal Hawkins. Following her marriage, Helen worked as a bookkeeper for Studer Super Service and in housekeeping at the New Glarus Hotel. Most recently she was seasonally employed at the Swiss Colony. She was a member of the Zwingli United Church of Christ, Monticello, and enjoyed painting ceramics, latch hooking, flowers, and gardening.
She is survived by her son, Robert (Lori) Hawkins; a grandson, Dylan Hawkins; three step-grandchildren, Brandon, Cody, and Kelsey Vavra; a sister-in-law, Helen Stauffacher; and a brother-in-law, Orville Gilbertson, all of Monroe. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband in 1989; a granddaughter, Jayda Hawkins; a sister, Doris Gilbertson; a brother, Kenneth Stauffacher; and two nieces, Leanne Mahlkuch and Karen Barryhill.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, September 21, 2012, at 11 a.m. at the Zwingli United Church of Christ, Monticello, with Rev. Lawrence Balleine officiating. Interment will follow in Highland Cemetery, Monticello. Visitation will be at the church on Friday from 10 a.m. until the time of service. A memorial fund will be established in Helen's name.
