Fred Gobeli, age 94 of Monroe died Saturday, May 22, 2010 at his home. Fred was born October 16, 1915 in Spring Grove Township, the son of Fred Gobeli and Ella (Wuethrich) Gobeli Schneider. He married Esther Balsiger on January 18, 1946 at St. John's United Church of Christ. They farmed in Spring Grove Township for many years before moving to Monroe in 1978. They rented their farm before selling in 1994. He and Esther enjoyed traveling to all 50 states, several trips Switzerland, fishing the many area lakes, and gardening. They were also members of the Monroe Turn and Schwing Club in the 1940s. Fred loved people and always had a joke to share. He was very skilled in woodworking, making whirligigs and other crafts that he would happily give to family and friends.

He is survived by his wife, Esther Gobeli of Monroe; two sons, Curtis L. (Kathleen) Gobeli of Woodbury, MN, and Richard A. Gobeli of Sturtevant, WI; six grandsons; one great granddaughter; a sister, Wilma Brandenburg of Brodhead; half-brother, Lawrence (Lucille) Schneider of Browntown; brother-in-law, Stanley Altenbernd; and a half sister-in-law, Rose Schneider, both of Monroe.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a son in infancy, Eugene Gobeli; a sister, Lorraine Altenbernd; half-sister, Helen (Herb) Matzke; half-brother, Marvin Schneider; and brother-in-law, Karl Brandenburg.

Funeral services will held on Wednesday, May 26, 2010, at 11:30 a.m. at the Newcomer Funeral Home, Monroe. Interment will follow in Greenwood Cemetery, Monroe. Visitation will be at the funeral home on Wednesday from 10:00 a.m. until time of services. A memorial fund will be established in Fred's name.
