Donald R. Folgate, 85, of Cedarville, died Wednesday, March 26, 2008, in Rockford Memorial Hospital following a brief illness.

He was born September 21, 1922 in Stephenson County, the son of Ray and Grace (Frank) Folgate.

On October 4, 1942, Mr. Folgate married Jean Hutmacher in Cedarville, Illinois.

Mr. Folgate farmed in Buckeye Township for over 50 years. He served as Buckeye Township road commissioner for 31 years and served as a board member for 12. As road commissioner, he helped maintained 59.7 miles of road.

Mr. Folgate also served on the Orangeville School Board, Stephenson County Service Co., Stephenson County Mounted Patrol and Stephenson County Farm Bureau. He was a member of the Belgian Draft Horse Association, and Brown Swiss Association and the Buckeye Mutual Insurance Company. After retiring he enjoyed caring for his Belgian horses, ponies, miniature donkeys buffalo, deer, llamas, Pigmy goats, beef cattle and sheep. His pride and joy were his horses.

Mr. Folgate was a member of Cedarville United Methodist Church.

Mr. Folgate is survived by his wife, Jean; two sons, Richard (LaVonne) Folgate of Monroe Center and Gary (Jean Spain) Folgate of Cedarville; three daughters, Diane Baxter of Rockford, Kathy Folgate of Cedarville and Sue (Barry) Hartje of Baileyville; one brother, Harold (Vera) Folgate of Orangeville; two sisters, Ruth Rockey of Freeport and Carol (Loral) Metz of Orangeville; also 15 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Jean Shippy and his brother, Larry Folgate.

Funeral services for Mr. Folgate will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, March 29, in Burke-Tubbs Funeral Home, 504 N. Walnut Ave., Freeport. Rev. William Blomberg will officiate.

Visitation will be from 3 to 7 p.m. Friday in Burke-Tubbs Funeral Home.

Burial will be in Chapel Hill memorial Gardens, Freeport.
