FREEPORT - Charles D. "Chuck" Fullerton, 79 of rural Freeport, died Wednesday, September 24, 2008 at his home after a short battle with cancer. Born October 16, 1928 in Chicago, he was the son of Floyd and Gladys (Greene) Fullerton. After graduating from Spencer High School, Spencer, IN, in 1946 he entered the U.S. Air Force in Radar Maintenance serving in Europe during the Berlin Air Lift until 1950. He then attended Purdue University from 1951-53. On August 24, 1952, he and Helen Marie Rockey were married at Freeport First United Methodist Church. Chuck greatly enjoyed working as a self employed electrician in the Eleroy and Lena area. Later he worked at Montgomery Ward prior to his retirement from Kelly Springfield Tire Co. in 1990 after 17 year. His church memberships included Lena United Methodist Church, Freeport First United Methodist Church and presently Embury United Methodist Church.
He was a member of the Lena Lions Club, National Rifle Association, Ducks Unlimited. He volunteered at the rummage sale for the Friends Forever Humane Society and was president of Kelly Springfield's Retirees Club. During his life he had a good time hunting, fishing, camping and being bossed around by the latest dog of the house. He read constantly and his favorite author was Sig. F. Olson.
He is survived by his wife of Freeport; two daughters, Terri (Daryl) Thyberg of McConnell, Cathy (Larry) Weik of Freeport; four grandchildren, Tamie (Major Greg) Dammann of Honolulu, Hawaii, Joanie (Brent) Gora of Winona, Minnesota, Andrew (Nicole) Thyberg of Lena, Amanda Weik of Freeport; 8 great-grandchildren, Sophia, Samantha, Cameron, Nate Dammann, all of Honolulu, Ellie and Ethan Gora of Winona, Minnesota, Haley and Gracelyn Thyberg of Lena; one sister, Janet Parfenoff of Gary, Indiana; one brother, Hugh (Judy) Fullerton of Prattsburg, New York and many nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m. on Sunday at Walker Mortuary, Freeport.
Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Monday at Walker Mortuary with the Rev. Jonathan Singleton of Embury United Methodist Church officiating.
Burial will be in the Oakland Cemetery.
A memorial fund has been established for Friends Forever Humane Society, Embury United Methodist Church and FHN Memorial Hospice.
