MONROE — A pre-trial conference was scheduled Tuesday for an accused teen sex offender from Monroe who apparently used social media to exchange sexually explicit content involving young children.
The case dates back to last fall. Reports said the suspect was arrested Oct. 14, 2021 after an investigation into a child pornography complaint. His phone and other devices were seized at that time.
According to a criminal complaint, the material included video and still photos, some including toddler-aged children. The suspect was caught sharing and downloading the images online and through SnapChat.
Kyler E.S. Wilkinson, Monroe, 17 at the time, was arrested at a residence in the 1400 block of 14th street by authorities. Monroe detectives and officers, assisted by agents of the Wisconsin Department of Justice-Division of Criminal investigation, conducted the execution of the search warrant. Child pornography evidence was located and seized.
The suspect’s internet site information led the state investigators to him and then they referred the matter to local authorities in Monroe, reports said. During an interview with local investigators, he described how he received and forwarded content he allegedly knew to include nude pictures of minors, sexual acts and other inappropriate content. While he reportedly told police he knew what he was doing was wrong, the teen apparently wasn’t very good at hiding his identity.
“I advised Kyler if he recalled an evening in June where he was communicating with three people and when Kyler would receive a video or image from one person, he would then share it with the other people with whom he was communicating with,” said the investigator, in his summation of an interview with Wilkinson, shortly after his arrest. “I advised Kyler that in and amongst these images and videos were selfie images taken of himself and sending to his friends and I asked Kyler if he recalled doing that and he advised he did.”
He told police that he met the persons with whom he shared the material almost exclusively on SnapChat and did not know any of them personally.
Wilkinson posted $10,000 bond on the charges in March, according to court records. Tuesday’s scheduled hearing was a pre-trial conference. Under terms of his bond, he was ordered to have no contact with minors and ordered to have restricted access to the internet by phone or computer.
No trial date has been set.
Since he’s being tried in adult court, Wilkinson faces a maximum possible prison sentence of just over 12 years. He also would likely have to register as a sex offender for life.
