JANESVILLE - A Brodhead man told Janesville police an unknown assailant shot him on the city's east side early Monday morning, Nov. 18 but detectives are skeptical of the man's story.
Police were called at 12:30 a.m. Monday to St. Mary's Janesville Hospital for a report of a gunshot wound, according to a Janesville Police Department news release.
The 35-year-old Brodhead man told police a stranger shot him near the entrance to the bike trail on Wright Road at Skyview Drive, Lt. Keith Lawver said.
The shooting victim said the stranger flagged down him and a friend as they drove by and asked for a ride, according to a news release.
As he stood outside the car, the man then shot the Brodhead man in the leg, authorities said. The Brodhead man's friend drove him to the hospital, according to the release.
The gunman was described as a white man of an unknown age, approximately 5 feet 10 inches tall, between 210 and 250 pounds, wearing a black stocking cap, blue jeans and a dark jacket, Lawver said.
Police have talked with the shooting victim and the car's driver, Lawver said, but said they aren't entirely buying their version of events.
"We don't think that they were being completely honest with us," he said.
Evidence police found at the scene is "inconsistent with the stories they've given us," Lawver said.
He declined to specify what that evidence was, however.
