DARLINGTON - A Benton man was taken into federal custody last week as part of a large-scale multidepartmental drug enforcement operation throughout the region.

Edward G. Behrens, 50, was turned over to the custody of the FBI May 5 after Lafayette County and Green County deputies and Monroe Police officers executed a search warrant in the 26000 block of Wisconsin 11, Town of New Diggings.

Behrens faces potential federal charges.

The search was one of several others carried out throughout southwestern Wisconsin and northeastern Iowa as part of "Operation Ice Pirates," an investigation into methamphetamine trafficking carried out for more than two years, headed by the Dubuque Drug Task Force in cooperation with the FBI.

Also arrested with Behrens was Elizabeth S. Hammer, 30, Benton, on drug-related and bail jumping charges. Lafayette County deputies took Hammer into custody.
