MONROE - The next step to make sure all of Monroe is included in storm siren coverage could be taken Monday night.
The city's Public Safety Committee will meet at 5 p.m. at City Hall to accept quotes and authorize purchase and installation of a storm siren near Fourth Avenue West and West Sixth Street, near ShopKo.
The siren would eliminate one of two dead zones - parts of the city that warnings from six existing storm sirens don't reach. Each of the city's sirens cover about a 10-block radius, depending on the siren's height and land topography.
Fire Chief Daryl Rausch said the siren will cost about $18,000. It already is included in the city's budget.
Current sirens are located at City Hall; along 8 1/2 Street near Northside Elementary; along Eighth Street near The Blue Ox; at the southern end of Fourth Avenue West near the Monroe Estates Mobile Home Park; on 25th Street just west of Abraham Lincoln Elementary; and on 21st Street just south of Lincoln Park.
The city's second dead zone is on the north side. Rausch planned to seek installation of a second new storm siren in 2009, near Alphorn Ford, to eliminate the dead zone, but it has been put on hold.
Rausch said he is going to wait to see if Menards is built, and then determine a better location for the siren. Rausch said that may be north of Wisconsin 11/81.
