Annual homecoming activities announced

MONTICELLO - Monticello Community Club announced the lineup of activities for its annual Monticello Homecoming that begins Friday, July 12 and goes through the weekend.

Softball tournaments will begin at 7 p.m. Thursday, July 11. The games will continue all weekend, through Sunday, July 14. To register for softball or for more information, call 608-426-4955.



Friday, July 12

Beginning at 4 p.m., the Lioness Club will have its food stand open all weekend. The menu includes brats, hot dogs, barbecue and homemade pies. The Lions Club will be serving homemade cheese curds and mushrooms all weekend. The Boy Scouts, the Booster Club and other local organizations will also be serving food.

FFA and FFA alumni will serve the fish boil, starting at 5 p.m., at the Octagon Shelter. In case of rain, the fish boil will be served at the Legion Building. Prices are $9 in advance for adult dinner and $10 at door or $5 for child's portion.

At 7 p.m., the Homecoming Variety Show will showcase local talent in a variety show format at Barnaby's Monticello House. From 8 p.m. to midnight, Hammer Down will perform at the main beer stand. There will be no admission charge.



Saturday, July 13

Mud volleyball and three-on-three basketball will be held on Saturday. To sign-up for the mud volleyball and the three-on-three basketball, fill out a form at the village hall by Tuesday, July 9. The poker run motorcycle ride will take place at 11 a.m. at The Kooler. Registration begins at 9:30 a.m. at The Kooler.

Registration for the free Kids' Pedal Tractor Pull is at 9:30 a.m. in front of Monticello Pool House on West Monroe Street. The event is for ages 3 through 10. There will be four age classes. For more info and to pre-register, call 608-938-1207.

At noon, the Tug-O-War tournament begins.

Registration for canoe races around Lake Montesian is set for 1:30 p.m. Races will begin at 2 p.m. Teams will consist of seniors, over the age of 55; adult males, ages 17 and older; adult females, ages 17 and older; co-ed; and children that are at least 12 and older. There is no fee to enter. Monticello Community Club is sponsoring the prizes.

A triathlon is set to follow the canoe races. The team divisions are the same as the canoe races.

Area firefighter water fights will be held at 2 p.m. on West North Avenue by the pool.

Helicopter rides are back this year and will be held from 5 p.m. until dusk. The cost is $35 per person for a 10- to 15-minute ride. Rides can be customized and the helicopter holds three people. Take-off and landing will be in the field across from the fire department.

From 5 to 7 p.m. at the main beer tent, there will be a DJ and Dan Klitzke will provide 70s and 80s country rock music.

At 6 p.m., people have the opportunity to meet the new Monticello principal, Mark Gustafson, and his family at Zwingli Church.

At the beer stand from 8 p.m. to midnight, there will be live music from JD and Boys at no cover charge. At about 9:45 p.m., where will be fireworks. The fireworks are set off at Lake Montesian. The rain delay for the fireworks will be at 9:45 p.m. Sunday, July 14.



Sunday, July 14

Church services, hosted by Zwingli Church, will begin at 9:30 a.m. at Montesian Gardens. Those who attend should bring their own lawn chairs.

Following the church services is a chicken barbecue, sponsored by Monticello Community Club. The meal begins at 11 a.m. at the Octagon Shelter. The club is serving half chicken dinners or just chicken. Chicken prices are $8 for an adult dinner and $5 for a child's dinner. Carry-outs are available. Delivery services are also available for senior citizens, handicapped or disabled persons who live within the village limits. To make an order for delivery, call 608-426-1843 before 7 p.m. Saturday, July 13.

The parade, featuring local veterans, is set to follow the barbecue. The parade will begin at 2 p.m. at the east end of Lake Avenue and will proceed through to the north end of Main Street. Parade entries and monetary donations are still being accepted. Those who are interested in participating or sponsoring a parade entry can contact Rachel Rufer at 608-938-4908.

A bean bag competition will be held at 3 p.m. at the baseball beer tent. No pre-registration is required; the event is first come, first serve. The cost is $10 per co-ed two-person team with single elimination. There is a limit of 32 teams. First place prize is $150, second place prize is $100 and third place prize is $70.

After the parade, the Zweifel Brothers will be at the main beer stand performing until 6 p.m. Dan Riley is performing from 7 to 11 p.m. There is no entry fee for any entertainment at the beer stand.

A raffle drawing will be held at 9 p.m. at the beer stand. Raffle items include $500, $250, $100 and two chances at $50; four Brewers prime tickets and parking; two Badger football tickets and tailgate; a wheelbarrow and rake; a grill; and a bean bag chair. Tickets are $5 for a book of six or $1 each and can be purchased at Monticello businesses or from any member of the Monticello Community Club. During Homecoming, they are available at the beer stand. Those who purchase need not be present to win.
