MONROE - The Monroe school board voted unanimously to hire Jeff Newcomer, currently the high school's interim athletic director, as the school's full-time activities director at a meeting Monday.
"He's the best candidate" out of more than 40 applicants, said Monroe High School Principal Chris Medenwaldt.
Newcomer, a 1999 MHS graduate and a Monroe alderman since the spring of 2013, was named interim athletic director by the board in January.
The new position replaces the MHS athletic director position that was responsible for scheduling games, officials and transportation for high school sports teams. Former Athletic Director Dave Hirsbrunner resigned at the end of November after being placed on administrative leave earlier that month.
In previous years, the athletic director had some teaching responsibilities, but District Administrator Cory Hirsbrunner said the activities director will not have any teaching duties.
Newcomer will, however, have some new responsibilities as indicated by the new title, including oversight of forensics and involvement in other student activities, according to Medenwaldt.
"There are other duties, depending how scheduling goes," Medenwaldt said. "So there's more responsibility on that end, and then he'll be (given) the option to do some other things, whether it's covering study halls or going through truancy data or stuff like that."
Newcomer's salary will be $55,880.
He has eight years of experience working in athletics, managing events and overseeing athletic facilities with the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater and other schools. He earned two degrees from UW-Whitewater: a bachelor's degree in health, human performance, recreation and coaching, and a master's degree in curriculum and instruction with a special focus on sports administration.
A team including Medenwaldt, Cory Hirsbrunner and school board member Dan Bartholf interviewed five candidates for the position. The finalists were: Keith Michlig, assistant athletic director at Georgia Southwestern State University; John Miller, physical education instructor at Sherman Middle School in Madison; Charles Seils, assistant principal for athletics and activities at Beloit Memorial High School; Nathaniel Verhage, dean of students at Madison La Follette High School; and Newcomer. A sixth candidate was slated to be interviewed but removed himself from consideration.
The school board unanimously approved the meeting's routine consent items, which included hiring Newcomer as MHS activities director.
Board members Amy Bazley, Michael Boehme and Brian Keith were absent.
