A Place in History: Peace United Methodist Church • Albany

Peace United Methodist Church is located on County C between County E and Wisconsin 104 north of Albany.

The church was built in 1886 on land donated by William Krause. The church was dedicated on Sept. 26, 1886.

The cost of labor for the building was $250. The building was insured against fire and storms for $800.

Alice Krause, whose husband is the grandson of William Krause, researched the history of the church for a centennial celebration in 1886.

She said the original name of the church was Friedens Church. In German, Friedens means peace. Services were held in German. Rev. C. Brendel was the first pastor.

She said lightning struck the original church in July 1896, causing a fire that burned down the building. The church was rebuilt in 1897.

Lightning struck the church again in 1930 and 1938, causing $100 and $200 of damage, respectively.

The church has no plumbing. An outhouse, still in use, is between the church and a cemetery.

Krause said everybody who donated money for the construction of the original church got a plot in the cemetery.

The oldest readable gravestone is for Friedrech Kleinschmid (above), who died on Oct. 7, 1886 at the age of 50. His wife, Minine, died 37 years later and is buried alongside him.

Worship is still held at 9:15 a.m. every Sunday at the church, which sits atop a hill on the south side of County C.
