A Place in History: Hefty-Jaberg house • Monroe

A prime example of the 19th century vogue for house hugeness is the Hefty-Jaberg home at the northwest corner of 16th Street and 17th Avenue.

The house was erected by Mrs. Jacob Hefty, widow of the man who rebuilt the Monroe Brewery after it burned in 1875.

Jacob Hefty bought the Monroe Brewery in 1868. In 1885, Adam Blumer joined Jacob Hefty as co-owner of the brewery. In 1906, the name was changed to the Blumer Brewing Company.

The large house, owned later for many years by Roy Jaberg, is among the late Victorian residences which display a wide shingle-surfaced projecting apron running around the structure between the first and second floors.
