MONROE - Three additional cases of E. coli 0157 infection have been found at Abraham Lincoln Accelerated Learning Academy in Monroe, the Wisconsin State Laboratory of Hygiene reported Tuesday. Oct. 25.

The total number of E. coli O157 cases reported in Green County since early October is eight, including seven infections among 4K and kindergarten students at Abe Lincoln Elementary school and one adult family member of a confirmed case.

Genetic testing of the newly identified cases is pending. The testing will determine whether the bacteria is related to the same strain of E. coli found in nine cases in Green County in August and early September, which left one child dead.

The three most recently identified students report no or mild symptoms, according to a statement released late Wednesday afternoon by the school district and Green County Health Department.

The report follows a screening effort by the health department and school district to identify all students infected with E. coli O157 bacteria in 4K and kindergarten classes at Abe Lincoln. All children in 4K and kindergarten classes were required to be tested by Monday, Oct. 24.

As of Wednesday, Oct. 26, Green County Health Department has submitted 164 stool samples to the Wisconsin State Lab of Hygiene for E. coli O157 culture. Five specimens were identified as positive for E. coli O157, with 13 specimens still pending results.

Individuals being tested include all 4K or kindergarten students at Abe Lincoln Elementary school, staff who work directly with these students and household members of confirmed cases. School-age siblings of children with a confirmed E. coli O157 infection are also being required to submit a stool specimen before they return to school.

No staff at Abe Lincoln Elementary school have tested positive for E. coli 0157.
