SOUTH WAYNE — The South Wayne Fire Department recently turned up the heat with another successful fish boil on Saturday, Aug 24. The homemade goodness that the South Wayne community worked hard to achieve was accomplished, as was the case in years’ past. Those who didn’t get the opportunity to show their support can still do so as donations are still being sought by the volunteers of the South Wayne Fire department.
Steve Lehman, Fire Chief for the South Wayne Fire Department, said it costs thousands of dollars to outfit one firefighter.
“Just the gear alone costs $3,400,” Lehman said. “You put that together with the helmet, which costs $375, boots which is $350, and other gear, you’re looking at quite a bit, and thats just for one firefighter.”
With additional costs of gloves, and other necessary accessories, each firefighter costs just under $5,000 each. Lehman said he just completed the order for the gear to outfit five firefighters. In 10 years, the firefighter equipment that has been ordered will be expired. That means the equipment will need to be renewed, with the ordering of new gear once again. Each year, the age/date of each piece of every firefighter’s gear is checked by the department, with older and expiring equipment getting replaced first.
The South Wayne volunteer firefighters work together to train both in the field and in a classroom, always updating their abilities to better serve their community. They answer the call, both day and night, to prevent loss of property and life. Most of the firefighters are also First Responders, which requires regular training to better prepare themselves for the next emergency.
“There is a lot that goes into updating the equipment also,” Lehman said. “We applied for a grant to update the air packs, air bottles, and the air compressor. That total cost comes out to $180,000.”
Lehman hasn’t been informed if the grant has been accepted as of press time. As equipment ages, there is a greater potential for equipment failure. Lehman cares about his firefighter family, and is working diligently to stay on top of outdated equipment and any potential threat that could come to any member of the team.
Lehman has been the South Wayne Fire Chief for the past four years. He started his volunteer services with the department in 1990.
“There are always needs to fill within the department,” he said. “Donations are always welcome all year long.”
The chief said he was happy with the community support of those who attended Saturday’s fish boil. The “burn off” flames intrigued the crowd as they awaited the next batch of fresh fish. Flame temperatures start at 400-degrees Fahrenheit. The South Wayne Fire Department volunteers worked together to keep things under control.
Anyone who has not yet picked up raffle winnings are encouraged to make arrangements to do so.
Those interested in becoming a volunteer firefighter are asked to contact Lehman. He said he is always looking to expand the fire department as well as the first responder family, as each person brings their own abilities and skills. Lehman said he has a great group already, but he looks forward to the chance to introduce more to the roster.
Fundraising remains ongoing as firefighters continue to educate, outfit, and prepare for the next emergency.
