MONTICELLO - The Monticello Area Historical Society will meet at 7 p.m. March 22 in the Zwingli United Church of Christ lounge, 416 E. Lake Ave. Following a short meeting, Gary Tipler will present an illustrated review on John W. Steinmann at 7:15 p.m. This is a free event.

Tipler, a historic preservation consultant, began his work in the mid-1970s in advocating for historic preservation in Madison's Marquette Neighborhood, where he lives and is involved still.

Tipler has worked for numerous developers over the years as a designer of new urban buildings and rehabilitator of existing old buildings in many communities throughout Wisconsin and four other states.

During the past few years he's continued his work in preservation advocacy and done research in preparing nominations for buildings to the National Register of Historic Places. He has done research in historic architecture, including the work of Conover and Porter Architects in Madison from 1887-99; Claude and Starck Architects, Madison, 1896-1929; and John W. Steinmann Architects, Monticello, 1939-74.

Tipler's interest and new connections with the Steinmann family began by meeting Howard Steinmann and his daughter Sue when promoting a Steinmann-designed Bennett-Prouty House from 1957 on Waucheeta Trail on Lake Waubesa in 2011.

Tipler has a wealth of images from both his and the Steinmann collection of the numerous buildings designed and built by the Steinmann family for three generations of architects.
