MONROE - Applications for the 2011-2012 Green County Leaders (GCL) Program, which is to begin in August, are now being accepted.

The program consists of an orientation, nine classes and a graduation banquet. Classes - generally held from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., on the second Wednesday of each month from September through May - focus on leadership skills and issues Green County communities and residents are or will be facing in the future.

Anyone interested who lives or works in Green County can fill out an application.

Brochures and applications for the program are available at the GCDC office, 1016 16th Ave., Monroe, or at the Green County UW-Extension, 2841 6th St., Monroe. Enrollment is limited to approximately 20 students each year, and applications are due no later than July 27.

The GCL program - created by GCDC, UW Extension Green County and other partners like Blackhawk Technical College - is intended to provide area residents an educational program to practice leadership skills, deepen understanding of community issues and prepare for leadership roles - thereby creating a network of people committed to the future of Green County, officials said in a release.

The program, which will mark its tenth year, has graduated more than 175 people in the Green County area since its first class in 2002.
