The Berry Tavern, located at the former early settlement of Gratiot’s Grove, will host its 10th Annual Open House Fundraiser and Concert on Friday, July 11. The event will begin at 4:00 p.m. and will be held at the historic 1840 stagecoach hotel, with bar, ballroom, and vernacular root cellar.
Hosted by Cory Ritterbusch, the event offers visitors a unique opportunity to experience one of southwestern Wisconsin’s most significant historic sites. A food truck will be on-site to provide food and refreshments throughout the evening.
Tavern historian Bill Briehan will lead tours of the 1840 stagecoach hotel, sharing the history of the building and the settlement it served. Mark Johnson of Historic Design Consultation, LLC, will demonstrate primitive construction methods and discuss traditional building techniques used during the settlement era.
Archaeologists with the Gratiot’s Grove Archaeology Project will be present with equipment to discuss ongoing archaeological investigations at The Grove. Cory Ritterbusch will also present information on the restoration of the 1854 Cholera Victims Cemetery and the property’s unique root cellar.
The Berry Tavern served as the post office for Gratiot’s Grove, a settlement founded in 1825 by Henry and Susan Hempstead Gratiot. Today, the property remains an important reminder of the region’s early frontier history.
Live music featuring period music will be performed throughout the evening. The Fever River String Band will begin at 5 p.m., followed by the Americana Band. The Accordion Divas will perform between and after the scheduled sets.
“You would struggle to find a more laid-back and authentic experience than this,” said host Cory Ritterbusch. “We’ve expanded the event this year to celebrate its 10th anniversary. The Berry Tavern sits in a beautiful setting atop White’s Hill with spectacular views of the surrounding countryside. However, if you need flashing lights and loud music, this event probably isn’t for you.”
This family-friendly event welcomes visitors of all ages. Attendees are encouraged to bring lawn chairs, as well as their own beverages. ATVs, and horses are welcome.
