Cheese Country trailhead project completed

Green County Leaders announced the completion of a Community Project to enhance the eastern terminus of the Cheese Country Trail, located within the City of Monroe. The trail has been a staple of southern Wisconsin recreation for many years, exposing countless tourists to Green County’s beauty and friendly local businesses. Monroe’s trailhead was ripe for improvement.

A project team from the Green County Leaders 2025-26 cohort collaborated with the City of Monroe, Green County Tourism, and the Green County ATV Club to beautify the trailhead and enhance signage. Team members repainted existing signage and installed a large new kiosk with a map of Monroe highlighting relevant local businesses. QR codes direct visitors to the City of Monroe Tourism page and the Green County ATV Club Facebook page for further information. Plants and mulch chosen for appearance and longevity were installed around the new kiosk and other existing signs.

“What was once an eyesore is now an inviting entrance to our community,” said Josh Trame, Parks & Forestry Supervisor for the City of Monroe. “This enhancement creates a welcoming first impression for those entering Monroe from the trail while elevating the overall visitor experience. Together, these partners have created a space that is not only more beautiful, but also more accessible, informative, and welcoming.”

“Improving the trailhead was an enjoyable experience for everyone involved,” shared Phil Loduha, Green County Leaders project team member. “It is a great example of the public, private, and volunteer sectors working together to make Monroe an even more inviting place to visit.”

ATV/UTV riders and interested members of the public are encouraged to visit the Cheese Country trailhead, located on Monroe’s southwest side, and enjoy the enhancements for themselves.
