Monroe

City band to wrap up with final shows

MONROE - The 62nd season of concerts by the Monroe City Band will wrap up this year with two appearances on Sunday, July 31 and Monday, Aug. 1.

On Sunday, July 31, the band will travel to Brodhead to perform as part of the "Twilight In The Park" series at 6:30 p.m. in Veteran's Memorial Park. Guest vocal group "Circle Of Friends" will perform with the band, and local guitarist Brian Koenig will solo on an arrangement of "Ground Theme" from the Super Mario video game. The concert will also include a medley of selections from "Jersey Boys", Red Skelton's "Red's White And Blue" March, music of Glenn Miller, and a classical suite from "Carnival Of The Animals."

On Monday, Aug. 1, the band will return to Twining Park's band shell, Monroe, for a 7:30 p.m. concert that will reprise Sunday's concert, along with a tribute to the Swiss heritage of the community on Swiss Independence Day with the playing of the Swiss National Anthem and the Overture to Strauss' "Die Fledermaus."

Both concerts are free and open to the public.

Concert-goers are encouraged to bring lawn chairs or blankets for the Brodhead concert. Bench seating is available for the Twining concert, but attendees may bring their own seating and picnic before and during the music.

Darlington

Annual police event slated Aug. 4

DARLINGTON - The Darlington Police Department will be host its annual Police Brat Feed and Ball Game on Thursday, Aug. 4, at Riverside Park, Darlington.

Officers will be serving brats, hot dogs, chips and beverage at 5 p.m., and they will sell until sold out.

At 7 p.m., law enforcement officers from the local, county and state levels will comprise "The Enforcers" softball team, which will face "The Community All Stars": a team comprised of various Darlington business representatives and community members.

The event benefits the Darlington Drug Abuse Resistance Education program, which is taught in first and third grades at Holy Rosary Catholic School, as well as in fifth grade at the Darlington Elementary-Middle School.

It also includes follow up presentations in the seventh and eighth grades, as well as a Role Model program in the junior and senior levels.

The community is invited and encouraged to attend.

Stockton

Music festival set for Aug. 13

STOCKTON - The 44th annual Willow Folk Music Festival will be held Aug. 13 to Aug. 14 at the Willow Church grounds, 6522 S. Willow Road, Willow, Ill.

More than 100 amateur bluegrass and country singers and acoustic musicians will perform from a hay wagon on the country church lawn, with jam sessions taking place in the pasture.

The schedule for Saturday, Aug. 13 is:

- 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. - open stage performances

- 6 to 6:30 p.m. - "One Man Band," (Tyger Johnson; music/testimony)

The schedule for Sunday, Aug. 14 is:

- 6:30 to 9:30 a.m. - breakfast, followed by Gospel music service

- 10:15 to 11:15 a.m. - "Christ's Country Choir"

- noon to 5 p.m. - open stage performances

The cost for admission is $5 per day. Food and drinks may be purchased on the grounds. No dogs, alcohol or drugs are allowed on the church grounds. For more information, call (815) 947-3789.

Lena

Park district to host trip Aug. 27

LENA - The Lena Community Park District will host a trip to Miller Park to watch the Milwaukee Brewers play the Chicago Cubs on Sunday, Aug. 27.

The cost is $85 per person and includes round-trip transportation and game ticket. The bus will depart Splashland Water Park at 1:30 p.m., Sunday, Aug. 27. Game time is 6:10 p.m.

Juda

Memorial contest on tap for Aug. 5

JUDA - The first Tyler J. Pierce Memorial Tournament will be held Aug. 5 to 7 at Juda Community Park, Juda. The three-day event will consist of a men's and co-ed softball tournaments, a co-ed volleyball tournament, and a co-ed kickball tournament.

Other activities will include a battle of the bands Friday, Aug. 5; a DJ Saturday, Aug. 6; kids activities; and a full concession stand all weekend.

Kids movie series to begin Aug. 3

MONROE - The children's movie series, "Cool Movies for Hot Days," will return to the Monroe Public Library, 925 16th Ave., on Wednesday afternoons during the month of August, with three new releases on the library's big screen and in full surround sound.

The movie schedule is as follows.

- Aug. 3, 1:30 p.m. - "How to Train Your Dragon"

- Aug. 10, 1:30 p.m. - "Tangled"

- Aug. 17, 1:30 p.m. - "Up"

All films in the "Cool Movies for Hot Days" series are rated PG. Kids and parents/guardians are welcome to bring their own snacks, drinks and floor pillows to the show.

All youth programs at the Monroe Public Library are open to children of all abilities. If accommodations are needed, contact the Youth Services Department at (608) 328-7010.

The Monroe Public Library is handicapped accessible, and parking is located behind the building or in the municipal parking ramp across the street.

Madison

Grant to support mobile pantry

MADISON - Second Harvest Foodbank of Southern Wisconsin recently received a $1,000 grant from the Monroe Fund, a component of the Community Foundation of Southern Wisconsin.

The funds will go to support the mobile pantry.

"Second Harvest Foodbank is grateful for the Monroe Fund's support of the Mobile Pantry in Monroe," Dan Stein, President/CEO for Second Harvest Foodbank of Southern Wisconsin, said in a release. "By providing a regular, neighborhood-based source of free groceries, this mobile pantry helps stretch the food budgets of low-income families in the Monroe Community."
