MONROE — With 4-3 wins over Watertown Luther Prep and Delavan-Darien on April 22-23, Monroe moves to 3-0 in Rock Valley Conference play.
“These last two conference matches have been absolute battles, and it takes every guy in our lineup giving it their all to give us a shot,” Monroe head coach Matthew Bordner said. “I think we’re doing that right now, but have plenty to improve on.”
In Monday’s match, Monroe took a 3-1 lead with wins at No. 1 and No. 4 doubles and No. 1 singles. WLP rallied to win its No. 2 and No. 3 doubles matches in super tiebreaks, setting up a winner-take-all situation in No. 3 singles.
Monroe’s Alex Gerrits lost his first set by tiebreaker but bounced back for the win in a super tiebreaker third set, 10-8.
Tuesday’s match was much the same, as No. 3 and No. 4 singles went to super tiebreaker sets.
In the two duals, No. 1 singles player Matthew Setterstrom and No. 1 doubles partners Ryan Mathiason and Wes Saunders proved to be consistent parts of the Cheesemaker lineup.
“Matthew, Wes and Ryan continue to be forces in our lineup and are playing extremely well,” Bordner said. “Matthew is constructing points extremely well, and Ryan and Wes continue to gel together and are just incredibly steady both mentally and with their shots.”
Monroe faced East Troy on Thursday, April 25. Results of their match up will be in the Wednesday, May 1 edition of the Monroe Times.
As Bordner views East Troy as another top team in the conference, the results from Thursday’s match will greatly impact standings.
