Albany kindergarten to fifth-grade students created original art work to celebrate Veterans Day. The pieces were made by the students with materials that helped them express their thanks and to celebrate veterans. Many of the pieces included thank you signs, heart shapes that express love and gratitude and the American flag. (Photo supplied)
The Veterans Day assembly is hosted by the Albany civics class each year.

We take this time to honor our veterans for their service to our country. The program assembly started with a welcome from our school, along with the introduction of all the veterans who attended. Then everyone rose while the flag was presented, followed by the Pledge of Allegiance.

Throughout the assembly there were quotes and poems read by a few of Albany's civics students. There were songs performed by both the middle and high school choirs, including the National Anthem, along with a music piece performed by the band, "Armed Forces-The Pride of America."

For the first time, this included a fundraiser and the winning grade chose the Disabled American Veterans charity as its recipient, which helps pay for physical and psychological rehabilitation programs for ill and wounded veterans. Also, 97 percent of money raised for this charity goes directly to veterans.

Students, staff and other members of our community were able to raise $138.62 toward this cause. We would like to thank everyone who participated in hosting this assembly, and also a huge thanks to both family and veterans for taking time out of your schedules to attend. Thank you for your service!
