Curran: One site provides for new housing opportunities, the other keeps the status quo
Letter To The Editor

Monroe

To the Editor:

To all who are interested in the coming high school vote of electors I thought it might be good to look at it from a somewhat different perspective. After spending Monday evening at the information question and answer session I look at the decision ahead from a new perspective, at least for me.

Some aspects I either learned or had confirmed:

1.  Bonds have been put in place and with interest create a fund of roughly $94 million.  These funds have to be spent on a new High School. No refunds, no rebates, no work on existing buildings.

2.  There is every expectation that a new high school will be built with these funds or possibly less based on the proven experience of CG Schmidt.

3.  One site is significantly larger and allows for more facilities, but in a different location.

What is best site for the future of our city based on current and future needs?

1.  One site provides for significant improvement of athletic space, the other calls for status quo and no room for expansion.

2.  Both sites will provide new and improved educational space.

3.  One site provides for new housing opportunities, the other keeps the status quo.

Monroe needs positive improvement in the areas of housing options and improved educational facilities to attract employees for existing and any future business growth. This will help grow the tax base while providing more opportunities.

The negative impact on students pointed out by others of constructing on the current site will have a huge negative impact on any recruiting of or bringing new employees into Monroe.

It appears to me that if we as a community want to use the funds to improve Monroe the site that provides the best use of the funds for our future is the B&S site.
