Letter to the editor: The three betrayals by Novak

To the editor:

I saw a letter to the editor that claimed Todd Novak was an Independent.

The author noted that as a Republican, Todd Novak voted against the Republican budget and therefore was independent. Actually, that vote is more like wearing a Halloween costume - so he appears to be something other than what he is. So let's look at the rest of his voting record.

Even though there are zero private voucher schools in the 51st Assembly district and even though the Republicans in the assembly had votes to spare, Todd Novak betrayed the taxpayers of Monroe when he voted for public funding of private (voucher) schools (AB462). And he betrayed them again when he voted against private schools having to comply with American Disabilities Act (AB148). And he betrayed taxpayers a third time when he voted against fixing Wisconsin's broken public school funding formula (AB482).

What do these betrayals mean to Monroe taxpayers? You don't have to look any farther than the red signs supporting the Monroe school referendum. Wisconsin's school budget underfunds Monroe's public schools and you, the property taxpayers, get the bill.

And what did Todd Novak get for his three betrayals? It is no secret that Todd Novak gets a big chunk of campaign money from a PAC that promotes public funding for private voucher schools. That PAC, the American Federation for Children, actually spent, at last count, $164,078.53 supporting Novak and attacking his opponent. AFC even named Novak as a "champion" of the anti-public education crowd.

In short, Todd Novak is not the poster politician for "Independence." After three betrayals and plenty of silver the more likely description is Biblical in origin.
