BLANCHARDVILLE - Pecatonica's boys basketball team picked up an ugly win Monday night over Potosi, 46-36.
"A win is a win, but it was not pretty at all," Vikings head coach Kevin Parman said. "We have to finish at both ends of the floor, boxing out and getting to the basket. Potosi played hard the whole game. Hats off to them. They are going to win some ball games because they don't give up and they're physical."
Pecatonica led 16-8 after the first quarter and 30-17 at the half.
"We pushed the ball very well in the first half, otherwise we might have lost this one," Parman said. "Our first half went pretty well for the most part, but the second half we got pretty sloppy - especially at the end."
In the second half, the Vikings offense deteriorated against Potosi's pressure defense. The Chieftain players forced multiple turnovers and found their way to the rack on numerous occasions.
"Defensively we all have to get better and box out. We talk about it everyday that it's all about the team and right now we all have to play better and finish together," Parman said. "I know we only have three seniors and we're young, but we need to get better and play each quarter until the final buzzer."
Pecatonica still outscored Potosi 6-5 in the third quarter and made enough free throws down the stretch. The Vikings shot 8-for-18 from the charity stripe in the game, including hitting 6 of 13 in the fourth quarter.
"When we aren't pushing it as well, we have to slow down instead of turning the ball over so much," Parman said.
Senior Devin Jeglum led the Vikings with 15 points, including scoring seven in the opening frame. Fellow seniors Jason and Jeremy Meudt each scored 10. Pecatonica committed 18 fouls in the game and put Potosi in the bonus before the third quarter ended.
"This one's over. We know what we need to do to get better. There's plenty of stuff we need to work on," Parman said. "We've got to put a whole game together. Right now we're playing one or two good quarters and the other two are as sloppy as it can get."
The Vikings (2-1) host defending Six Rivers East champion Monticello on Thursday in their conference opener.
