MONROE - In their Badger South Conference season opener, the Monroe girls swimming team ran into a power surge.
The Panthers dominated the dual meet, winning every event. The hosts took the top two spots in nine of 11 races en route to a 113-44 win over the Cheesemakers Tuesday night at the Green County YMCA.
"They knew Oregon was tough, reality hit and they got down a little bit," Monroe coach Linda Moser said.
Moser then had a message for the Cheesemakers.
"When we race, we race with our heads held high," she said. "I'm very proud of them."
Monroe sophomore Veronica Andraski broke the Panthers streak of taking the top two spots in eight straight races, finishing second in the 100-meter backstroke in 1 minute, 15.71 seconds.
Fellow sophomore Leanna Schwartzlow followed up Andraski's breakout performance with a second-place finish in the 100 breaststroke in 1:23.82.
"At the end she gave a lot of pull from within," Moser said. "She paced it perfectly. It was an awesome race to watch."
Moser said Andraski already knows what she does well and needs improvement on after each race.
The self critique is a sign of a maturing swimmer.
"That has made a difference in her racing," Moser said.
The Cheesemakers swam their first meter meet of the season after a pair of yard pools at invitationals.
"They may look at their times and say, 'Oh, they're not that good,'" Moser said. "When you swim against a team as good as Oregon, when you sit down and look at it, they probably swam some of their fastest times."
The Cheesemakers are juggling their lineup now to find the best fit for the team later on.
"When push comes to shove in the end, I want them to feel strong in their best stroke," Moser said.
Monroe junior Randi Robertson took third in the 200 freestyle (2:34.31) and fourth in the 50 freestyle (:31.93).
The Cheesemakers finished third in the 200 and 400 freestyle relays. The Cheesemakers' quartet of Andraski, Robertson, Kendell Niffenegger and Schwartzlow in the 200 freestyle relay finished in 2:05.30. The 400 freestyle relay team of Jolene DeNure, Jessica Moehn, Britney Johnson and Sara Heitkamp took third in 5:03.22.
Niffenegger added a third-place finish in the 100 butterfly (1:20.80) and a fourth in the 200 individual medley (2:53.10).
The Cheesemakers' 200 medley relay team of Robertson, Niffenegger, Schwartzlow and Andraski took third in 2:17.86.
The swimmers return to the pool at 6:45 p.m. on Thursday when they host Madison Edgewood.
