MADISON - Monroe junior Silas Setterstrom's goal of reaching the semifinals of the Badger Conference tournament at No. 1 singles came up just short Friday.
Setterstrom cruised to a 6-0, 6-0 win over Baraboo's Mike Tenamor in his first-round match at the University of Wisconsin's Nielsen Tennis Stadium. Waunakee's James Paradisin then defeated Setterstrom in the quarterfinals 6-1, 6-2.
"His second match was one to remember," Monroe coach Ashley Hermanson said of Setterstrom. "Paradisin is the top No. 1 singles player in the Badger North, and he was given a run for his money today even though the scores don't reflect it.
"Setterstrom and Paradisin took almost every game to deuce and almost always went into Paradisin's favor after a handful of rounds. Setterstrom ran almost everything down that Paradisin hit at him, which Paradisin has not seen much during the season. Setterstrom played some of his best tennis today in hopes of making the semifinals. That hope was cut short, but hopefully his momentum will carry into the tournament next week."
At No. 2 singles, Portage's Daniel Staveness beat Monroe junior Ryan Peterson 6-4, 6-2.
Portage's Jason Narel at No. 3 singles beat Monroe sophomore Quinn Sulejmani 6-0, 6-1.
At No. 4 singles, Portage's Cody Santas beat Monroe senior Ryan Stoneback 6-3, 7-6 (8). Stoneback went up 5-4 in the second set and only needed one more point to tie the match at a set each and force a match tiebreaker. However, the lead slipped away. Stoneback got ahead 6-3 in the set tiebreaker but lost it 8-6.
"Ryan had a great first match today," Hermanson said. "After dropping the first set, he finally got his game going in the second set. He started to keep the ball in play and made his opponent make a mistake. This was a great match for Ryan. He showed great improvement and played to his strengths."
Baraboo's No. 1 doubles team of Jake Huffaker and Nic McReath defeated Monroe junior Kody Althaus and senior Tanner Purdy 6-4, 6-1.
At No. 2 doubles, Reedsburg's Colin Crolius and Ryan Dregney defeated Monroe's Brett Lyne and Ben Dombkowski 6-0, 6-0.
At No. 3 doubles, Monona Grove's Bennett Wesley and Carlos Torrado defeated the Cheesemakers' Zeke Frankford and Andrew Johnson 6-0, 6-0.
