Redhawks top Cheesemakers

MONROE - The Monroe boys tennis team is a young squad, and that means it will endure its share of growing pains and tough losses. Milton handed the Cheesemakers a tough 4-3 loss in Badger South Conference play Thursday.

"In our four losses, two of them were three-setters and we lost tiebreakers in the other two matches," Monroe coach Brad Saugstad said. "I told the boys after the match that these are the growing pains a young team goes through. Winning isn't just something that happens, you have to learn how to do it."

Monroe junior Taylor Soddy defeated Kenneth Yapp 6-1, 6-4. at No. 1 singles. At No. 2 singles, freshman Kevin Noriega lost 2-6, 7-6 (3), 6-1 to Eric Grote.

The Cheesemakers found themselves in another tough match at No. 3 singles as Milton's Weston Lunder beat Monroe freshman Eric Bush 6-3, 7-6 (6). Monroe freshman Matt Monahan dominated Miton's Sam Miller 6-2, 6-0.

Monroe's No. 1 doubles team of senior Cristian Noriega and junior Kevin Kohlstedt fell 6-3, 7-6 (6) to Milton's Jared Matchette and Luke Lee. At No. 2 doubles, Milton's Tucker Hecimovich and Matt Winters topped Monroe's Josh Riese and Bob Seichter 7-5, 2-6, 6-2. The highlight for Monroe came at No. 3 doubles as senior Luke Andraski and freshman Jeremy Miller claimed a 6-3, 6-1 win over Cam McSweeny and Jake Morris.
