Pec, Brodhead get big wins in season debuts

BLANCHARDVILLE - Pecatonica's boys basketball team opened its season with a big win Tuesday over Mineral Point, 46-34.

The Vikings held the Pointers to just four points in the first quarter, while jumping out to a 15-4 lead. By halftime, the Vikings led 23-17. Senior Devin Jeglum scored 10 of his 14 points in the half.

In the third quarter, Pecatonica put the game away, outscoring Mineral Point 16-6 in the frame to take a 16-point advantage headed into the fourth.

The Vikings got their first win for new head coach Kevin Parman, who took over for Jim Syse in the offseason.

Jeremy Meudt had 11 points and a 3-pointer. Tannar Johnson had nine points, Taylor Berg had five points, including a 3, Jason Meudt had five points and Karson Feller added two points. Garrett Bennett led Mineral Point with 19 points.

Highland 43, Argyle 42

ARGYLE - The Orioles opened their season with a tough loss Tuesday. Argyle led 35-33 after three quarters, only to have Highland come away with the one-point win.

Kyle Geissbuhler scored a team-high 13 points for Argyle, which included a pair of 3-pointers. Ryan Geissbuhler had seven points, Jared Johnson had six on two 3s, Matthew Rosebrook scored six, Nate Thomas four, Stephen Shambrook four and Cody young added two.

The Orioles found themselves behind 12-6 after the first quarter and trailed by five at halftime, 25-20.

Highland's Nick Pierick scored a game-high 14 points.

Highland's junior-varsity also won, 37-33.

Brodhead 58, Belleville 47

BRODHEAD - The Cardinals opened their season with a bang, routing Belleville.

J.J. Panoske scored a game-high 25 points for Brodhead, which led 16-7 after the first quarter and 28-14 at halftime.

Jake Cole scored 11 points for the Cardinals, and Michael Peterson had nine. Cole added a 3-pointer and Panoske had two 3s.

Brodhead made 21 of 29 free throws.

The Cardinals' next opponent is Monroe on Saturday. The Cheesemakers, who made it to the state championship game a year ago, knocked out the Cardinals in the same gym in the second round of the playoffs last season.

In other area action Tuesday, Darlington defeated Platteville on the road, 51-42, for a season-opening victory.
