The first week of the fan voting for our high school Athletes of the Week section is complete, and the winners are Kevin Frint, Monroe, Tyler Ritschard, Monticello, and Sydney Bump, Albany.
There were 86 votes cast between online reader comments and e-mails. Of those, Frint got all 10 votes directed at Monroe, beating out Jamie Armstrong and Michael Barrett.
Ritschard garnered one more vote than Black Hawk's T.J. Adams, 4-3, with J.J. Panoske receiving zero votes despite a 25-point performance in the season opener.
Bump's 25 votes edged the 24 received by New Glarus' Tanya Gruter. Juda sophomore center Ellen Kiser picked up 20 votes.
Overall, it was a good showing of votes and reactions from fans. Some fans feel that we here at the Times did well enough making our selections and that the voting would become too much of a popularity contest. While the potential is there for a popularity contest each week, we are trying to get fans involved in the process.
Each week, sports reporter Mark Nesbitt and I sit down and name three finalists, and then try to figure out a winner. Sometimes it is hard to pick the right player, because we don't always want to pick the big game over the big shot, or vice versa.
By letting fans vote, it gives you the opportunity to have your voices heard.
I've added two more rules to the weekly selections. From now on a player will not be allowed to win two weeks in a row, and reader comments, e-mailed, mailed and telephoned votes will need each person's first and last name, along with the name of the town where the voter lives.
Consider it a friendly census and a weak attempt to slow down multiple votes with fake and anonymous names.
Thanks for participating this week, and wait to see who is up for the honors next time.
