VERONA - The only tennis victory Monroe salvaged Tuesday against Badger South monster Verona was, naturally, by the skin of the Cheesemakers' teeth.
Monroe's No. 3 doubles pairing of Nick Hendrickson and Pat Gellings outlasted their adversaries, 7-6, 2-6, 6-4, to grind out the only win in a 6-1 conference dual loss to the Wildcats.
Monroe managed to win just five games in the singles matchups. Carson Root won two games in his No. 1 match, while the rest of the pack pulled out one win apiece.
The doubles teams fared better as Matt Turek and Levi Jannsens dropped a 6-2, 6-2, decision in No. 1 action and Mark Hoesly and Jim Kundert were defeated, 6-3, 6-2, in the No. 2 division.
"Verona is a very good team, the best in either the North-South Badger," Monroe coach Jim Bartholf said.
The Cheesemakers welcome another challenge when Madison Edgewood visits Friday, before Monroe hosts its doubles event Saturday.
The junior-varsity boys had an equally-rough night Tuesday, losing 8-1. Monroe's only winner was the doubles team of Stewart Wyss and Joe Ganshert.
