Monticello can't overcome walks against River Ridge

MONTICELLO - Walks came back and haunted the Monticello baseball team in a tight game in the nightcap of a doubleheader against River Ridge on Friday.

River Ridge took advantage of some scoring opportunities to post 14-2 and 5-3 victories.

In the second game of the twinbill, Monticello senior Lukas Kolasch pitched six innings and gave up four earned runs on two hits. He walked eight and had six strikeouts.

"Every run they scored started with a walk," Monticello coach Jason Pinnow said. "That killed us every time."

Josh Kolasch, who went 4-for 6 in the doubleheader, just missed hitting a game-tying home run in the fourth and settled for a double. However, the Ponies (3-14, 3-11 Six Rivers East) were unable to knock him in.

"He missed a game-tying home run by eight inches off the top of the fence," Pinnow said.

Josh Kolasch went 2-for-3 with one RBI and Lukas Kolasch was 2-for-3 in the nightcap.

Monticello freshman Jake Pusel started his first varsity game in the first game. He pitched 4 1/3 innings and gave up six runs (two earned). He walked eight. Senior Austin Steffen gave up three runs (two earned) in 1/3 of an inning and sophomore Shane Miller pitched 2 1/3 innings in relief and gave up five runs (two earned) on five hits. The three pitchers combined walked 11.

"I felt like we were in it the whole game in the first game until it got away from us in the fifth when they scored six runs," Pinnow said. "In the second game we hit the ball hard and there were some good defensive plays. They just came out on top."

Highland 12, Argyle 4

HIGHLAND - Alec Treuthardt hit a home run in each game and went 5-for-6 to provide the highlight for Argyle, which was swept in the doubleheader.

The sophomore went 4-for-4 with a solo home run and had two RBIs in the first game, then went 1-for-2 in collecting the Orioles' lone hit - a round-tripper in the third inning - in the nightcap.

"He's just a good hitter," Argyle coach Chuck Bredeson said. "He hits the ball hard."

Andrew Wolfe pitched a five-inning one-hitter for Highland in Game 2, when the Cardinals got home runs from Blake Bodenstein, Bailey Bodenstein, Nic Piereck, Brandon McCollough and Wolfe. Colton Ploessl started for Argyle (2-12) and went three innings, allowing 12 hits and 12 runs - 10 earned - with three walks and three strikeouts.

Argyle's Kyle Olson started the opener for Argyle. Six of the 11 runs he allowed were earned. He allowed 11 hits.

The Orioles' Rhett Starr made his varsity pitching debut in relief in Game 1 and went two innings, allowing one earned run on two hits while striking out one and walking one.

"He came in and did a really nice job," Bredeson said.

Potosi 10, Albany 0

POTOSI - The Chieftains cooled off the Comets by sweeping a doubleheader.

Albany (6-6) had won six of its last nine games. The Comets were limited to just two hits in Game 1, when junior Patrick Deegan had a double.

Senior Ty Mauerman pitched three innings and gave up nine earned runs on 11 hits. He struck out four and walked two.

In the second game of the twinbill, freshmen Clinton Sullivan and Mitchell Trow were each 2-for-3.

Albandy senior Cody Schultz pitched two innings and gave up eight earned runs on four hits. He walked five and struck out one. The Comets were plagued by four errors.

Marshall 10,

New Glarus 8

NEW GLARUS- The Glarner Knights stormed back from a 9-0 deficit, but the rally fell short in a slugfest against Marshall.

New Glarus (7-8, 5-5 Capitol South) scored three runs in the fourth and fifth and two more in the sixth.

The Glarner Knights had 10 hits. New Glarus senior Aaron Nimtz went 3-for-4 with three RBIs. Senior teammate Evan Hauge was 2-for-3 with two runs scored and two RBIs.

Sophomore Tyler Molencamp pitched three innings. He gave up seven runs (four earned) on seven hits. He struck out one and walked two. Sophomore Kyle Larson pitched four innings and he gave up three earned runs on six hits. He also struck out one and walked two.
