MONROE - The Monroe volleyball team picked up its first win of the season against New Glarus and finished fifth place in the 32nd annual Monroe Invitational Saturday.
Monroe (1-6) finished the tournament 1-4. Mount Horeb beat Monroe 25-13, 25-16. Wisconsin Heights edged the Cheesemakers 25-23, 25-22. The Cheesemakers won a nail-biter over New Glarus in three sets 25-19, 19-25, 15-13. Richland Center, the eventual champions, rolled past the Cheesemakers 25-7, 25-22. Watertown Luther Prep then beat the Cheesemakers 25-21, 25-19. Monroe junior Hannah Vetterli missed the invite due to a family emergency and that gave two young sophomore players a chance to play even more, including Alicia Kuester and Chloe Schroeder.
"Too many missed serves and lack of communication were the downfall," Monroe coach Heidi Witt said. "Take away the missed serves puts us back in many of these games. We just can't miss that many serves. You have to find a way to just get it over the net."
Kuester had a team-high 25 kills, senior Kari Jordan added 22 kills and Schroeder added 15 kills. Witt was encouraged by the play of Kuester and Schroeder.
"With more experience at this level, we will be seeing some great things out of these two players," she said.
Monroe junior Paige Murphy had 52 assists and sophomore Hannah Neuenschwander had 42 assists. Jordan notched six aces and delivered 13 digs. Monroe senior Lauren Curtis had 14 digs and Murphy added five aces.
There were several areas Witt expects to build on with the Cheesemakers.
"We have been working on net awareness in practice and we didn't get a single net call," she said. "Our passing was really on point."
