MONONA - Curt Miller finally busted out the heavy artillery at Saturday's Monona Grove Invitational.
Monroe packed its distance relays with its most talented quartets and placed seventh out of 19 teams with 42.5 points.
Stephanie Wyss, Tessa Frutiger, Calyn Bidlingmaier and Tess Seichter pooled their effort to take Monroe's lone gold in the 4x800-meter relay with a time of 10 minutes and 6 hundredths of a second.
Madeline Arnold, Frutiger, Tyreisha Gibson and Wyss took fourth in the 4x400, a tough field, at 4:16.20.
"We really haven't loaded up those relays yet this year, so today's meet was the day to find out whether or not those relays could potentially have success in regionals and sectionals. I think we got our answer."
Meaghan Tomasiewicz launched her way to second place in the pole vault at 9 feet, 6 inches. Bidlingmaier added another medal and a personal record with third place in the high jump at 4-10 and Wyss' sixth-place finish in the long jump (15-3.75) rounded out the points in the field portion.
Seichter finished off a stellar day with third place in in the 3,200 at 12:21.46.
"Our girls knew what was expected of them, and they went out and performed beyond that," Miller said. "It's a big accomplishment to win an event at this meet."
