DARLINGTON — The Redbirds tee off the girls golf season with sectional qualifier Laura Weaver returning, as well as another senior and a pair of all-conference juniors. Sophie Wiegel was a first-team all-conference pick a year ago, while Josie Meister was honorable mention. Alexis Bridges is also back for Darlington.
“There is a very solid group of newcomers who will contribute this season as well,” said coach Molly Rice, now in her seventh season as the head of the program. “The goal for the team this season is to be competitive in every meet and get better every day.”
Rice said her team’s greatest strength will be the four returning letter winners — and two all-conference hitters. “This will help us set the tone of the program for the newcomers,” Rice said.
Staying mentally strong throughout the season — especially on challenging courses and at invitationals — pose the biggest challenge for the Redbirds.
“Our conference will be very competitive again this season. Wisconsin Dells and Lancaster return some very strong golfers this year, so they will be very tough,” Rice said.
The season was set to start on Aug. 12 with a home quad meet. They play competitive rounds eight times in an 18-day stretch to start the season, then four more times in September once school begins. Regionals are scheduled for Sept. 28 at The Oaks, with sectionals slated for either Oct. 3, 4, or 5 at Prairie du Chien.
