PATCH GROVE — With its 14-6 win over River Ridge (4-2, 2-2 Six Rivers) on Friday, Sept. 22, Black Hawk-Warren (6-0, 4-0) picked up its fourth conference victory, securing a spot in the playoffs. Despite the win, Warrior head coach Desmond Breadon knew his team had more in the tank.
“I let the players know we are now playoff eligible, but got a lot of work to do before playoffs happen,” Breadon said. “Overall I was really pleased with how we played, but we can’t leave points on the field in big games like we did tonight. Twice we were inside the 10-yard line and got behind the chains because of quarterback-center exchanges with the wet conditions.”
River Ridge scored first on a 71-yard TD pass from Brandon Davis to Matthew Nies. The extra point was unsuccessful, leaving the door open for Black Hawk-Warren. With 12 seconds left in the first half, Eli Schliem connected with Bryce VanRaalte for a 6-yard TD pass. The Warrior XP also failed, leading to a 6-6 tie at halftime.
Black Hawk-Warren took the lead midway through the third quarter on a 5-yard rushing TD by Lane Marty. Schliem’s 2-point conversion pass to Owen Seffrood was successful for a 14-6 lead. The defense held for the remainder of the game to pull out the victory.
Schliem led the team in the air and on the ground. The junior had 49 passing yards with one TD and 186 rushing yards. Seffrood tallied another 114 rushing yards, while Marty had the lone rushing TD. Defensively, Piercen Mahoney hauled in an interception.
Black Hawk-Warren, ranked No. 8 in Division 7, faces off against Potosi-Cassville, ranked No. 10 in Division 7, on Saturday, Sept. 30 for the Warriors’ homecoming game. The Chieftains have one loss on the season and sit one game behind the Warriors in conference.
“This week is going to be a monstrous game with Potosi[-Casville] for homecoming,” Breadon said. “They’re the best team we’ll see yet this season, and it’s going to take everything we have to beat them. We have to continue to improve this week and get deeper as a team.”
