MADISON - Monroe junior pitcher Ryan Erickson wanted to get through the first inning of his first start of the season unscathed.
Edgewood's Ben Young had other ideas.
Young led off the game for the Crusaders with home run in a four-run first inning and the Crusaders added eight runs in the third inning en route to a 16-0 win Thursday in five innings in a Badger South Conference game.
Edgewood starting pitcher Zach Harrington allowed just one hit - a two-out single by junior Dusty Burkhalter in the second inning. Burkhalter was the only baserunner for the Cheesemakers.
After giving up four runs in the first inning, Erickson retired the Crusaders in order in the second inning, but Edgewood clubbed three home runs in an eight-run third inning off Erickson and Burkhalter.
"Any time you give up eight runs in an inning, it's hard to come back," Monroe coach Dustin Huffman said.
"They (Edgewood) hit the ball hard. Give them the credit. We need to get more strikeouts to be successful. We'll work hard at it and teach the kids to pitch, not just throw."
The Cheesemkers, who dropped to 2-11 overall and 1-6 in the Badger South, begin a busy stretch of five games next week with a conference game at Fort Atkinson on Monday.
