East dominates West in Six Rivers Conference Challenge

JUDA - The Panthers held Shullsburg to just seven first-half points en route to a 43-24 Six Rivers Crossover Challenge win Friday night in girls basketball.

"We came out and played well defensively," Juda coach Curt Brown said.

Ellen Kiser had 13 points to lead Juda. Amber Ramos had nine points, Alycia Grenzow scored eight and C.J. Dunwiddie added seven.

Monticello 54,

Cassville 26

MONTICELLO - The Lady Ponies have found their offensive groove the last few weeks, and the shooting spree continued on Thursday as Monticello rolled Cassville in the Six Rivers Challenge.

"Our press worked really well," Ponies coach Tom Eveland said. "We had a lot of shots and ran our offense. Our shooting ability is really starting to come to life."

Monticello led 22-6 after the first quarter and held a 35-12 advantage at halftime.

Becky Nelson had 10 points to lead Monticello and Marissa Berg, Taylor Klitzke and Des Marty all scored eight.

Argyle 44, Benton 36

ARGYLE - The Orioles picked up their second win of the season, thanks to 21 points from sophomore Kayla Ostby.

Argyle led 27-20 at halftime and kept the Zephyrs at bay throughout the second half.

Danielle Treuthardt added nine points for the Orioles.

Belmont 52, Pecatonica 42

BLANCHARDVILLE - The Vikings couldn't find a way to stop Belmont's Kailee Kamps, who scored 34 points and had nine rebounds in a Rivers Challenge game.

The Braves led 20-15 at halftime and steadily pulled away in the second half.

Pecatonica shot just 28 percent in the game and was just 4 of 17 from 3-point range.

Senior Ellie Gifford led the Vikings with 10 points. Sophomore Lizzy Britt had nine points and five rebounds and senior Alisha Esselstein added eight points and four rebounds for Pecatonica.

Albany's Six Rivers Crossover game against Potosi was postponed to Feb. 22.

Brodhead 49,

Whitewater 43

BRODHEAD - Mariah Mohns scored 17 points and Carly Mohns added 16 more as the Cardinals improved their Rock Valley Conference record to 6-2.

Brodhead trailed 13-9 after the first quarter but tied the game up at halftime at 25. The Cardinals again trailed 35-32 at halftime but used a 17-8 run in the fourth quarter to win the game.

Fouls ruled the game. Whitewater was whistled for 29 infractions and Brodhead committed 20 fouls. Brodhead (8-6 overall) finished 21 of 41 from the free-throw line and Whitewater was 20 of 27 from the charity stripe.

Marshall 47,

New Glarus 41

MARSHALL - The Glarner Knights committed 30 fouls and Marshall connected on 20 of 42 free throws Friday night in girls basketball.

New Glarus trailed 24-16 at halftime but brought the score back to within four headed into the final quarter.

Chelsea Holler and Alycia Atwell each scored 12 points for New Glarus.

In boys basketball action, Brodhead lost to Wisconsin Dells 61-40. The Cardinals trailed 32-12 at halftime and never contended in the second half.

Darlington defeated Riverdale 60-37. The Redbirds led 30-19 at halftime and 46-27 after three quarters.
Wellnitz records fourth double-double

ARGYLE — With her fourth straight double-double of the season, Brooke Wellnitz helped Argyle-Pecatonica defeat Southwestern 73-28 on Dec. 9. The sophomore scored 21 points with 16 rebounds. She was just one assist away from a triple-double.

Kylie Butler and Loretta Tisch also scored in double figures with 29 and 12 points, respectively. The defense forced 27 turnovers, while the offense tallied 21 assists.

AP jumped two spots in the Division 4 WisSports.net Coaches Poll from No. 10 to No. 8 with a 5-0 record.


CAMBRIA-FRIESLAND 54, JUDA 51

CAMBRIA — The Panthers had a two-point lead at halftime, but the Hilltoppers came back to win in a nonconference game Dec. 9.

Ryleigh Brown led all scorers with 15 points, hitting four three-pointers. Anna Bartels also finished in double figures with 14 points. Phoenix Homan had two buckets beyond the arc in her eight-point total.


DARLINGTON 32, BLACK HAWK 30

DARLINGTON — Maddy Lange made a buzzer-beater, but it wasn’t enough for Black Hawk in a nonconference game Dec. 10. The Warriors had held the Redbirds to just three points in the first half, but Darlington outscored Black Hawk 25-15 in the second frame.

Sadie Goebel led the Redbirds with 13 points, followed by Maddie Gratz with eight. Gratz, Lilly Ritchie and Sydney Wiegel all grabbed five boards. 

Lange finished with 12 points for BH, and Hailey Wellnitz grabbed seven rebounds. 


JEFFERSON 55, MONROE 15

JEFFERSON —  The Cheesemakers put up just 33 shots in its Rock Valley Conference matchup Dec. 10, which was half as many as the Eagles attempted. A large factor in the discrepancy was 42 turnovers by Monroe compared to just 15 by Jefferson.

Coming off the bench, Holly Carpenter scored a team-best five points in seven minutes on the floor. Lauryn Quinn and Brinley Roidt crashed the boards with seven and six rebounds, respectively.


NEW GLARUS 60, LAKE MILLS 30

NEW GLARUS — A balanced offense helped the Knights defeat the L-Cats in a Capitol Conference crossover game Dec. 10. Eight different players scored, led by Kalia Malaise with 15. Ellie Brenkman also finished in double figures with 12 points.


BELLEVILLE 55, LAKESIDE LUTHERAN 39

BELLEVILLE — With just a three-point lead at halftime, the Wildcats pulled away from the Warriors in a Capitol Conference crossover game Dec. 10. The trio of Toria Devoe, Maddi DeSmet and Addison Edge led Belleville with 26, 17 and 16 points, respectively. 


In other local girls basketball, Brodhead fell to third-ranked Edgerton 71-48.
