FORT ATKINSON - The Monroe boys soccer team still is searching for its first Badger South Conference win and goal after a 2-0 loss Thursday to Fort Atkinson.
In their first game without junior forward Michael Gross, who suffered a broken leg in a 3-0 loss Tuesday to Madison Edgewood, the Cheesemakers struggled early. The Blackhawks scored two goals in the first 17 minutes.
"I think it would have been a big lift to get that first conference win," Monroe coach Tony Stamm said. "It was in that first 20 minutes, everyone wasn't sure what their roles were without Michael."
Fort Atkinson's Ryan Smith scored the first goal on an assist by Taylor Smighyman at seven minutes.
Fort Atkinson's Michael Green scored the Blackhawks' second goal in the 17th minute.
Monroe senior Dan Becker had seven saves.
The Monroe junior-varsity team defeated the Blackhawks 1-0 to remain unbeaten.
